I spent the morning at church, playing my violin. Once again it was just a small group: the flute, the oboe (or in this case, English horn--she is a multi-instrument player), and me, plus our 80 year old bass player. I thought we played very nicely together--perhaps because we did five pieces that I like--although the flute player was disgruntled by a few notes that were not up to her standard. Church went on longer than usual because the sermon and reading were long. They were about welcoming and hospitality. My first reaction to these kinds of exhortations (if I don't just zone out completely) is to think "Oh dear, I should be doing more!" But then I came to my senses and realized that after a long life of welcoming strangers and angels, and strange angels, we know more about hospitality already than most of the congregation will ever learn, so I don't really have to worry too much.

I did a little bit of writing, and the Sparrowhawk worked on the fence project. Then we tried to go for a walk by the lake, but it started raining. The umbrella I brought along wasn't much help, because the wind blew the rain right under it, so we took refuge under a picnic shelter. The rain still blew in under the roof, but the umbrella served as a windbreak. We had a friendly chat with a college student who was out for a run and took refuge along with us. She was practicing for a 5k run in a few weeks. It was fun to sit outside in mild temperatures and watch the rainclouds and the rain washing across the lake, and the swans bobbing for food, not bothered at all by a few raindrops. When it slacked off a little bit, we made a break for the car and went home. The rain has been rattling on the roof all evening.
