We actually got some sleep last night. Woo hoo. Our morning chit-chat over coffee made me laugh because it was so typical. First I shared some thoughts that had occurred to me as I was walking around and around the house to get my 250 steps per hour, about the potential downside of destroying the founding myths of the republic, with historical examples. Then the Sparrowhawk shared some interesting facts about the American role in WWII, particularly some things I hadn't known about the battle of Midway. Ho hum, just another lazy morning. This is one of the reasons why we don't jump in and Get Things Done first thing in the morning. Because we're always reading something and we JUST HAVE TO tell each other about it, having no other audience. Or in my case, I'm often constructing paragraphs in my head and need to share them with someone. The other reason for not getting anything done is lack of sleep and aches and pains, both of which make one slow on the uptake.

The Sparrowhawk went out to lunch with a friend, and I was getting things done and it was all going pretty well until I became distracted by my thoughts again and put a cup with metal on it into the microwave. AGGHHHH. Fortunately, the sizzling sound made me realize my error before the entire kitchen blew up, as it does when Steven Seagal puts metal things in the microwave in "Under Siege." I hit cancel and opened the door, and smoke eddied out, making the whole house smell the way I imagine a burning space ship probably would. Poison metal smoke. It's not good. I think (hope) I didn't do any permanent harm, except to my self-concept. A mistake like that crushes me and makes me question my sanity.

Post-funeral, we're trying to carry out fun things you can do when you're retired. Like cheap movie night, which was yesterday. We saw "Hobbs and Shaw," a spinoff of the Fast and Furious franchise, filled with large, improbably ripped men tearing around blowing things up and crashing cars while uttering improbably absurd banter, a completely improbable plot line, the improbably charming Vanessa Kirby performing improbable martial arts feats, Helen Mirren as the improbable mother of Hattie and Shaw, and some nice views of Samoa. A smorgasbord of improbabilities, in short, but it was fun.

Today we carried out Art Night, which we had been planning for some time but kept having to put off. I have a crazy variety of art supplies collected over the years, but I never get around to using them. We started out easy with crayons. The Sparrowhawk drew a red wagon, which succeeded in being sort of a schematic diagram of a wagon--an interesting look at how his brain works. Then he colored a lovely mermaid in one of my coloring books. He did a super job. She's properly adorned with vivid colors, and has blue skin like Mystique. I tried to draw a potted plant in crayon. Then I washed it with a yellow watercolor wash to look like sunlight, and then added more green color to the leaves. I was not at all satisfied. It never comes out the way I want it to, because I haven't spent 10,000 hours practicing. Sigh. I got out a little book I have about sketching your life, and did the first page, which was just to sketch something that was right in front of you. I used a black crayon to draw the watercolor box, my water glass, and a napkin, and added some more colors in crayon. The result was crude but fun. If we keep doing this as long as we live, we MIGHT get good at it someday.
