Waking up at home--what luxury! The bed in the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill was quite comfortable, but nothing is ever as comfortable as your own bed. We had clear weather for traveling, and were lucky to get home just when we did. As we were driving home from the airport, it started to snow a little bit. This morning, there were several inches of snow on the ground, and it kept snowing most of the day. I waited till it stopped, about 4, and then performed the First Shoveling of the Winter. It's not supposed to happen before Thanksgiving. I had hoped that the snow wouldn't come tomorrow, so I'd have time to rake my leaves, but it was not to be. They may be there until spring.

I had a good time at Philcon. It was so encouraging to talk to writers again, and to see old friends. My panels went pretty well: one was good enough, two were survivable, and one was really fun. That's about the standard ratio. Unluckily, the fun panel was the one at 5 pm on Saturday, so not very many people attended. At first it looked as if lots of people were going to join us, but then it turned out that they were in the wrong room, and they all left. Then people kept coming in and finding out it wasn't the room they thought, and then leaving, and even when one panelist rearranged the placards for greater clarity, we still had people coming in and then leaving. But that was part of what made it fun. Pretty soon it just became a big joke and we were all laughing about it. There were only three of us on the panel, and we were there to discuss the Hugo winning short story, "A Witch's Guide to Escape." It was more like an enjoyable conversation about a story than a regular panel.

But my favorite part was just seeing people. (Especially [personal profile] oracne!) What I really like best about cons is those times when you're having a meal, or just sitting in the lobby enjoying a much-needed post-panel drink, and people drift by and join the conversation, and pretty soon there's a convivial group of old and new friends. I love that, and my great fear when I go to a con is that this time it won't happen and I'll be by myself wondering why I'm not having fun. But it did happen this time, and it was great. My only wish is that more of the people I miss could have been there.
