Owlet of Bliss
May. 2nd, 2020 10:20 pmPursuant to my goal of doing a useful thing or two in the long expanse of each day, I went out and fixed the front flower bed. The guys who came to waterproof our basement last fall said they would carefully move and then put back any ornamental plants that were in the way. However, what they actually did was to dig up the plants, dig their trench, lay their drain pipe, fill in the trench, and then kinda dump the plants with their root balls back on top of the mud. I waited through the winter until the ground thawed, and then a bit longer until I could see if the plants were still alive, because I didn't want to replant them and then have to dig them up again. Now it appears they've all survived and are putting up some shoots. So I got my shovel and boots and dug four fairly large holes, rassled the big chunks of dirt and roots we're calling "a plant" back into the holes, and filled them in. And reset the stakes that hold up the trellis that holds up the clematis, which was one of the plants. It still looks a bit raggedy, but better. Then I did a bunch of weeding, though not enough. It is never enough. I came inside and had a big drink of water, and then some tea on the back porch with the Sparrowhawk. It was another lovely and pleasant day.
He was going to make cheeseburgers, but I suggested we get takeout from the restaurant that was advertising lamb meatloaf. He went and picked it up in a very sanitary manner, and then I washed the plastic containers it was in while he was washing his hands, and microwaved it, and we ate it. Tomato soup, lamb meatloaf, and potatoes and carrots. Very delicious. After dinner, I got him to help me get the garden fence panels out of the shed and set them up again. I do have some pea shoots, and I don't want the bunnies to eat them. I also cleaned the sink and the toilet.
We retrieved our six boxes of LPs from the storage unit when the kids cleaned it out last year, and it occurred to me that quarantine would be a good time to work our way through them all and see what we've got. I started at the wrong end because that's the way the box was facing and I'm too lazy to haul it out of the closet. They are sort of alphabetized--two of classical, two of rock/folk, and one of "children's and language" (it says on the side in magic marker). Oh wait, that's only five . . . well I'm not sure about the other one then. Also too lazy to go count them again. Anyway, we've done some Vivaldi, some Wagner, some Weber, my one foray into New Age music back in the 80s, Andreas Vollenweider's "White Winds," and now we're onto Paul Winter. We seem to have more of those than I thought. I still like Earthdance a lot. It's just hilarious to see the album cover photos of those scruffy, brooding hippies. Oh, my, didn't they take themselves seriously back then! I'm not sure how he got into the "classical" box, but my filing systems are always more honored in the breach than in the observance.
