Goldenrod of Flourish
Aug. 20th, 2020 06:59 pmWe made our trip to the lake, and now we're back. Like most things these days, it didn't go quite as planned. Tuesday was great. Our room was ready when we arrived, and the kind woman who runs the desk had made sure we got our favorite spot. We went straight out to the state park and found a spot by the river to eat some sandwiches while delighting in the fresh breeze in the leaves, the antics of chipmunks and crows, and the sparkle of sunlight on the water. Then we went to the beach. There was a nice strip of sand available, more than last time, although the wavs have now encroached on the foredune to the point where they've pulled down a lot of dune cherry bushes as well as the marram grass. We found a spot at a good distance from others without much trouble and set up our undeniably old folks camp. The wind was up, and it blew over our umbrella a broke one of the spokes. We put it up again and weighted it down with backpacks, and I used a hankie to pad the broken bit so it wouldn't poke a hole in the fabric. The water wasn't exactly warm, but it wasn't freezing. I swam for maybe 40 minutes, and it was delightful. The Sparrowhawk came out for awhile--until I pointed out that his lips were turning blue. The yellow flag was up, but I don't know why. Perhaps because the wind was strong from the northwest and there were moderate waves. The wind may have been causing currents, but not near us. I went back in later for a short but delicious farewell dip.
So far, all was well, but then I made my fatal error. The Sparrowhawk wanted to try takeout from a place where we'd enjoyed eating in person, some time ago. I had a bad feeling about this, but it was late and my blood sugar was low, so I agreed to the suggestion. His order was fine. Mine was badly cooked and pretty awful. Being hungry, I ate about half of it, but I was very sorry later when I had horrid acid reflux and stomach pain that made it impossible to lie down. I was up until early morning, when I finally got a few hours of sleep. Wednesday was suboptimal, what with the double whammy of being sick and in pain from my stomach, plus staggering around due to lack of sleep. I was afraid I'd have to just go home. However, we got coffee for the Sparrowhawk and sat by the river again until I felt enough better to venture on a short walk. We went down one of our favorite trails along the lost lake with its beautiful views of wetlands and forested dunes. There was a fresh breeze again, and sunlight on the water. White and yellow waterlilies and spikes of arrowleaf were blooming. I could smell the sweetness of blueberry thickets, and we found a handful of berries. We had to stop and rest more than normal, but it's a lovely place to sit still if one must. I had to turn back sooner than I wanted, but as we were on our way back, a heron flew along the shore next to us, really close. It was like a friendly greeting and made me feel better. We came home earlier than we planned. Once home, we both took not entirely voluntary naps, so apparently home was the right place to be.
Yesterday I couldn't ingest anything other than water. Today I had soup and half a piece of toast for lunch. That worked, so I had more soup and a whole sandwich for dinner!! So far so good. I didn't do much of anything, other than water my plants and re-purpose two parts of a lattice to make a frame for my beans to climb on. At the end of the day, their tendrils are already wrapping tentatively around it. I gathered two roses from the new Pearly Gates bush. They are subtly silver-pink, with a fresh delicately sweet fragrance.
