It's so amazing that there's still a bit of light in the sky at 10 pm, half an hour after the sun set. I love the long evenings of the Western Michigan summer. We spent the evening with friends from church, drinking the Bush 41 with our pizza and strawberries. We got together to plan a service for a summer Sunday, since our minister goes on vacation during the summer, but we had plenty of time to just hang out as well.

Yesterday on my walk, I saw the swans again, this time definitely with a cygnet in tow. Alas, it was only one--I guess the other didn't make it. Maybe it was that evil old snapping turtle! I saw wild roses blooming among the willow trees, and several very cute turtles sunbathing. I heard both green frogs and a bullfrog croaking, but I didn't see either one, because they were deep among the rushes where I couldn't spot them.

When I stopped at the store, I saw some fish on sale again. This time it was just lake perch, but I took it home anyway. I breaded it with a little cornmeal and some spicy seasonings and pan fried it for dinner, with grilled peppers, asparagus and tomatoes (left over from another meal), new potatoes, and salad. I also took the leftover breading, mixed it with the milk and egg mixture I'd used to make it stick, and added a half teaspoon of baking soda. Then I dropped this batter into the pan and fried it with the fish so it became little savory pancakes, kind of like hush puppies. I like cooking a meal that, when plated, looks like something you might order at a restaurant. Normally, the Sparrowhawk would have gone to the gym, but he ended up in a late meeting and decided to come home afterwards, so it was lucky that a delicious dinner just happened to be waiting.
