I'm trying not to fall into a post-event slump. Slowly catching up with laundry, groceries, etc. The Sparrowhawk came down with a bad cold, so we've been spending a lot of time in. Today, however, he wanted to go and sit by the lake, so we drove over there with our folding chairs. It was a cloudy day with a stiff breeze scooting the sailboats over the water. I was worried he'd get chilled, but it was fine. The pleasant lapping of the waves and the scent of water do have a healing presence. He seems to be feeling a little better since we got home, and in fact made a delicious pot of corn and leek chowder for supper. Thanks to young Raptor, the Sparrowhawk has become addicted to the Great British Bake-Off. He's been amusing himself while sick by binge-watching it, and it is inspiring his cooking ambition.

I haven't been at all happy with my recent phone calls to my mother. Yesterday she seemed very depressed and confused. She had taken an after-breakfast nap, and when she woke up, she didn't know what time it was and thought it was time for bed again. She had trouble hearing, kept hanging up by accident, and was generally distraught. However, she seemed to be feeling better today. She got up early, washed her hair, and put on her good clothes. She thought she might get on the bus and go to church. Unfortunately, the process of getting dressed up made her too late to catch the bus, but it cheered her up enough to attend the in-house Methodist service instead. This invigorates her, because she can then complain about it and say how it's not as good as Catholic church!

I'm still reading what I now know is properly designated as the Science in the Capitol trilogy. Washington DC has now frozen solid, after a devastating flood resulted in all the zoo animals being turned loose. The story has kind of turned into the Redemption of Frank Vanderwal, who is now living in a tree house in Rock Creek Park. I find him really annoying, as well as a Marty Stu to beat all, but it's not making me hate the books. I'm intrigued to see just how this redemption is going to play out, and I'm very curious about whether Robinson knew Frank is annoying, or whether he thought the reader--in this case, me--would love Frank and just miscalculated. Maybe he was aiming Frank at a different kind of reader.
