I'm hard-pressed to create a cheerful post, given that I woke up at 4 am and couldn't go back to sleep, with the expected results of being tired and cranky and then having to take a nap, which totally messed up my so-called schedule. However, while sitting around wishing that I could go back to sleep, I decided to make some bread, since we were out. Bread is a wonderful thing. It takes just a little yeast, a little sweetening, whether honey, molasses, or sugar in a pinch, a little salt, a little oil, and a couple of pounds of flour. Mix it all up, let it rise, and then bake it. It puffs up in the oven, and then you have a row of very satisfying brown and golden loaves. All before dawn, in my case.

That was kind of the pinnacle of my day. Although I did get a call from Mr. Former Student to say he'd had a nice time with my mother, and that she really enjoyed serving him cookies, with some ginger ale she got from the cafeteria. Of course, tonight I talked to her, and got the slightly more exotic version in which she pondered the niceties of possibly using a pillowcase in lieu of a tablecloth. And hung up on me several times, and then pushed the Facetime button by accident and became suspicious of me because she said I didn't sound like me! So I pointed out that my face was visible on screen, and that reassured her.

We had lightning and thunder last night! Unusual for December. And then the wind howled around the house all night and day. The neighbors had set up a sleigh with reindeer in their yard, and when I went outside in the morning, I was greeted by the edifying sight of the little girls scrambling around trying to pick up Santa and the reindeer, who looked as if they'd been thrown from the car after a drunken police chase after the bars closed. One of the gilded balls that decorated the tree by their front door had blown into my yard, and I went over and hung it back up. My neighbor asked me if any trees were down. Fortunately, not in my yard. I guess that's pretty cheerful, as is the fact that little girls band together for Santa Rescue. Good old Santa. They didn't even make him say the Sinner's Prayer before helping him back into his vehicle. Little girls save Christmas!
