I'm going to count today as another victory, because we successfully carried out our turn as volunteers in the religious education class at church. There IS an actual RE curriculum for UUs--I wouldn't want you to judge them by us--but this semester we've been running it on strictly volunteer activity, with people just doing a class on whatever they're interested in, and relating it to UU values as best they can. Our friend Keith did one on evolution, because he has a fantastic fossil collection and is very knowledgeable. Our friend Elgin did one on jazz, for Black History Month, and showed the kids his double bass and let them pluck the strings. Our humble contribution was to dress up in our Hogwarts outfits and do a class based on the Harry Potter canon.

We had to do some ad hoc revision of the plan, because we ended up with a different class than we'd been expecting. We thought we'd have some of the older, more rambunctious kids, including several boys. Instead, we had five absolutely darling little girls. The oldest was only eight. And it turned out that she was the only one who had read Harry Potter! We talked about the different houses at Hogwarts, and how each of them had something special to contribute. And how everyone has good qualities inside, and they are all equally important and needed by their friends. They all shook their heads very solemnly when we asked if they wanted to be sorted, but they didn't mind sorting themselves by choosing from the insignia we brought along to share. Then they designed their own house badges with the help of coloring materials and a couple of coloring books I brought along--Flower Fairies and Mermaids. Luckily, I also brought my Dover Books Treasury of Fantastic and Mythological Beasts, for the very shyest and quietest of the girls loved dragons and only dragons! I found a couple of fierce ones to clip out for her.

Then we spent a few happy hours with the Philosopher, who arrived last night very late. The Sparrowhawk did some online shopping with him for his birthday present, which was dispatched to his address forthwith. I sent him home with a box of cake, which is always very satisfying to a mother's soul.
