Today's leftover dream phrase: "I'm just here for the magic."

My mother called this morning, for no reason. The housekeeper pointed out that she had a lot of messages on her phone, so she thought she'd better call and find out why I'd been leaving all those messages. I tried to explain that was from when I'd call her at night and she didn't pick up--not from today. But she couldn't hear well enough to understand what I was talking about. We had a nice chat anyway. By the time she figures out that tomorrow is Thursday, it will be Friday already . . . .

Today I got my walk in by going downtown to the Black Lives Matter demo. We got a lot of friendly honks today, although a friend told me that right before I got there, some guy pulled over to inform them that "all lives matter." We always answer courteously, but I always want to say "Gosh wow, I never thought of that!" So it was good that I wasn't there--I didn't have to bite my tongue.

I was a little bit late because, as I was parking my car, a young woman ran across the street to catch me and say, "Can I ask you a question?" "Sure," I said, hoping she wasn't a missionary. It turned out she was having trouble figuring out how to pay for parking! She was a foreign student. While her English was very good and clear, though accented, there were some nuances of daily life she hadn't figured out yet. She had pulled up to a meter, and then saw that it said "Expired." She thought that meant you couldn't park there. I told her it just meant she had to put in more money. But she was looking for a place to slide her credit card into the meter, and there wasn't any. I showed her where you put the change in, and since she wasn't carrying any cash, I gave her my leftover quarters. I hope she doesn't get a ticket--that would be another rude lesson in local customs.
