Last night was the full moon, in a clear sky. The light was gorgeous and eerie. The sky was that strange blue of a full moon night, and the light cast moon shadows through our windows. Mars was shining near the moon, glowing like a topaz--more gold than red. The Sparrowhawk says it's in opposition and at its closest to the Earth in many years. So if you get a chance to go out and see it tonight, don't miss it!

Our socializing this morning went pretty well. We met the Sparrowhawk's old friend from high school at a great breakfast place and had a great breakfast. She does talk a lot, and it was a long breakfast. But she talks about interesting things. I heard with amazement the story of another old high school friend of the Sparrowhawk's--this one was a girlfriend at the time--who is now married to an architect and has converted to Catholicism. She's landscaping their property with the help of a professional landscaper and is making a garden completely dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the spiritual life. It has garden "rooms"--one of them created to symbolize the "Dark Night of the Soul." She's ordering bronze sculptures from Europe to decorate it. Oh my goodness. I find this a great time not to be Catholic, given the dumpster fire of biblical proportions that is now taking place in the revelation of the misdeeds of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and the soon-to-be released 800 page grand jury report detailing the crimes of 300 predator priests in western Pennsylvania. I left the church in 2005 over the grand jury report about the diocese of Philadelphia. This is worse. This friend will have plenty of opportunity to work on praying away the sins of the Church in her lovely garden.

The Nipper was attending Confluence in Pittsburgh today, and called me on the way home to talk about writing. I wish I were a better example for him! Like Shakespeare, I am "wishing me like to one more rich in hope/Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,/Desiring this man's art and that man's scope,/With what I most enjoy contented least."
