Jasmine of Simmer
Aug. 13th, 2018 09:36 pmLast night, we hoped to see some Perseids. I laid out some blankets and pillows on the porch roof, and we went out there around midnight to watch for shooting stars. There are a lot of trees around the edges of the yard, but that's not entirely a disadvantage, because they shut out some of the light sources. It was supposed to be a clear night, but it wasn't really. It was humid and hazy, with only a few stars visible. As time went on, more clouds drifted in. At first we saw several bright trails, but then there were fewer. After about an hour, we got tired and went in. Still, we saw about a dozen during that hour, which is more than we've ever seen before! We also saw fireflies, and a bat. It was a cozy way to enjoy the night. It wasn't quiet at all! There was a din of cicadas, something unknown croaking rhythmically, and the constant thrum of the freeway, which unfortunately is always audible, even though it's several miles away. The Sparrowhawk came out again at three, which was supposed to be the peak, but he didn't see anything, so he didn't wake me up.
