The weary travelers arrived at last after many misadventures. It took them nearly 24 hours of driving to get here. There were traffic jams all through North Carolina, road work in West Virginia, and then a tire blew out when they were only 15 minutes away! But they're all surviving and in pretty good spirits, even the dogs.

The Sparrowhawk and I were running around all day getting ready. I got more steps and active time than I do on some days when I take a walk. I'm still feeling weirdly tired and listless, but I can always motivate myself to bake. I made four big loaves of bread and a three layer chocolate cake, while the Sparrowhawk cut up peppers, onions, and mushrooms and cooked them with shrimp and some basil and thyme I picked out of my garden. I made a big salad. When the evacuees finally arrived, we put the spaghetti and broccoli on to cook, and warmed up tomato sauce for those who wanted to add it to the shrimp mix. I knew from experience that when you've been living on road food and Mountain Dew, you need a hot meal with lots of veggies in it. After we all ate and cleared the table, I made a lot of glossy chocolate frosting and the Diva piled it onto the cake, and then we lit the candles and sang Happy Birthday to a man who deserves many days of celebration! We didn't have time for a lot of birthday activities today, but I did take a few minutes to play schmoopy songs for him on my YouTube and take a much needed hug break.

It's funny to have visitors from the south. We have the AC on, and the kids want wool socks and more blankets! I'm just so grateful and relieved that they can be here with us instead of hunkering down in the face of a monster storm. I'm very grateful to our son-in-law Kansas for driving for a million years so they could be here. How long they stay depends on the storm.
