Well, it's been nonstop fun ever since the Sparrowhawk's younger half-brother, known here as Baby Doc, called to say he and his wife would be in town for ArtPrize. We invited them to stop in for dessert and a glass of wine last night. The Sparrowhawk bought a berry pie downtown, and brought me a bag of Cortland and Northern Spy apples from the market so I could make apple crisp. Northern Spy is one of my favorites, and this was the first picking of the year. Northern Spy has dense flesh with a tinge of yellow under a red and green skin, and the flavor is tart with a hint of spiciness. When cooked, they maintain their shape and don't go all mushy, so they're great for pies and crisps. Cortland has a crisp, pure white interior, a bit sweeter and more juicy than a Spy. The combination was excellent.

Today, we met them downtown and saw a lot more cool art venues and paused for lunch at an Italian place where I had minestrone and mushroom bruschetta. Just before dinner, Baby Doc's son, Baby Doc II (because he's a medical student now) and his girlfriend (also a future doctor) arrived in town. More art viewing, followed by a delicious dinner--in my case, a poached pear and walnut salad with beets, endive, and goat cheese dressing, followed by a fancy burger with tomato conserve and aioli. It was really great to see them. I wish my knee and foot didn't hurt so much--roughly six hours of stumping around town made me feel I needed to sit down more than I needed to see more art. But the pain goes away and the fun memories stay.

One of the coolest things we saw wasn't a big art piece, but a set of art journals where each page was a striking painting with a few descriptive words incorporated into the art. Mrs. Doc and I agreed that we would so much love to be able to journal with colorful art like that! I did point out to her that it would help if we went to Istanbul, like the artist.
