Nov. 20th, 2018 11:56 pmVery eventful day, with a few minor catastrophes. We kept hoping the boil water advisory would end, but it hasn't yet. They say we can take showers, as long as we keep our mouths shut and don't swallow any water. This seems counter intuitive. If the water is contaminated, why would I rub it into my body? But we did it anyway. While the Sparrowhawk was showering, there was a knock at the door. It was a local resident whose children had rented this place for Christmas, and she was worried about whether it was really repaired. So I invited her to come in and have a look, and she was pleased and reassured. As soon as she left, there was a terrific crash upstairs, and it turned out the Sparrowhawk had pulled the shower curtain rod down. He managed to put it back up, and I suggested that he use the other shower, where there are more things to grab. We went for a walk on the beach, which was the good part. Then we had to make another shopping run, and got back just before the Nipper and family arrived.
Meanwhile, I had received two emails. One was about my mother, and the other was from Ms. Science, to let us know that Mr. Science will be going to the hospital on Monday for surgery on his collarbone repair, which is not working out. (Yes, he and the Philosopher both broke their collarbones and had them repaired.) They think he has an infection in there, and they'll have to take out the titanium plate they screwed onto the bone, and give him IV antibiotics for weeks to make sure he gets better. It's really sad to know he'll have to go through this, and also daunting that he won't be around to help with Mother. Queenie called me immediately to discuss, and also to express her dismay at the idea of Mother getting the TAVR procedure. She is deeply suspicious of what is going on, and doesn't really think it's a good idea. I'm not able to reassure anyone, or even to know for sure what should be done, or what the doctors really said, because I wasn't there. My sisters are covertly at odds again. It's upsetting and fills me with dread.
But having the kids is great and makes up for a lot. Following the menu plan, I made a hamburger and baked potato bar, with broccoli, spinach, salad, tomatoes, onions, sour cream, pickles, and all the condiments, and let everyone prepare their own. I built the Skeleton Horse for Raptor, from his new Minecraft Lego set. We had some wine, played bananagrams, had a look at Mars and the moon, and listened to some of the tunes from "Lestat!" a little known musical that made everyone laugh hysterically.
