Jan. 2nd, 2019

Not exactly the enthusiastic and exuberant day I was hoping for at the beginning of the New Year. Ever since we watched "The Muppet Christmas Carol" with the kids, I've been thinking of Michael Caine as Scrooge, singing A Thankful Heart. And every night will end/And every day will start/With a grateful prayer and a thankful heart. But it seems as if every time I resolve to be more like that, I have a Day of Shitty Attitude and screw everything up! But it's only Day 2, so I'm not giving up yet.

We went out to the book store this afternoon and bought a couple of boxes of Christmas cards on sale. It's a little ritual I like to perform post-holidays. It's nice to open up the box the following year and know that I already have some cards. It also avoids the gumption trap of thinking I could send out some Christmas cards--but wait, first I have to find some and buy them. This is a trap I've fallen into quite often, and buying them at the end of the season avoids it. The Sparrowhawk changed the old red tablecloth from my parents' house for the new one that is ours. It snowed a little bit tonight, and evening drew the dreamy snow-light over the street, and the Christmas tree lights still glowed with magic in the gathering dark.

The Sparrowhawk's brother Fritz wants to come for a visit, but he isn't coming tomorrow. This is a relief, because I think we are going to need some naps.
