Memorial Day
May. 27th, 2019 09:23 pmIt's good to be home. We got up and set out early, without bothering about showers or breakfast. The Sparrowhawk figured out how we could get back to the freeway by an alternate route. We'd seen the usual road on the way in, and it looked pretty crowded. Our route in the morning was green and uncluttered. When we got to the turnoff for the expressway, the Sparrowhawk had figured out a way to get all the way home on two-lane highways, so we skipped the turn and just kept going. Last night and this morning were nice because they reminded me of childhood days in Illinois: old houses in the shade of old trees, flat landscapes under big blue skies, streets that ended in cornfields, small towns and farms and river crossings. I drove along enjoying the morning light and thinking as usual about the wonder and sadness of the world.
We spent the rest of the day not doing much. We put the flag out. We sat out in the back yard in the shade of our own trees, in companionable silence, listening to the birds chirping. I meant to do a lot of weeding, but I didn't. The Sparrowhawk weeded some, and napped some. We had soup and sandwiches for dinner, using the leftovers from our charcuterie lunch. I thought about my father's grave, far away in Illinois, and wished I could decorate it. But we'd passed several old graveyards in the country, and they all had flags and flowers, so maybe someone has done that for my father too. I got email from the Duchess about her lunches with Mother yesterday and today. Mother is having hallucinations again. I have no idea why. She's not on any medications that would cause that, so it must be something happening within her own brain. One of my cousins found me on Facebook and friended me. We put up the string of lights that the Diva gave me for Christmas, to light up the screen porch. They were lovely when we tested them. It turned chilly and rainy, so we're not sitting out there tonight, but soon.
