We both slept rather late this morning, after working very hard at going to sleep and staying asleep, and having complicated dreams. However, we cobbled together a decent amount of snooze time, so we're recovering.

There were about three different parts to the day: a sunny dawn, followed by a gloomy midday with intermittent rain showers, followed by wind blowing away the dark clouds and bringing in fluffy white ones moving fast across the sunset. Followed by a hard gust of wind driving in the next round of dark clouds and more rain. Four. Four different parts to the day. So the walk on which I scurried out during the non-rainy part turned out to be quite exciting what with all the weather going on. I also saw the heron perched in the pond, looking like a piece of weathered grey wood until he bent his head and came up with one of the baby koi with which the pond was recently stocked. A flip of redgold fish, and then--down the hatch! I also saw four crows. They were very big. A crow is much bigger and more impressive up close than you imagine them when they aren't around. Not at all like those cute, cheeky little blackbirds, who by the way were doing their best to bravely chase the crows away from the pond. Finally, as I was walking through the parking lot past the peony bed, I heard a dog in a neighboring yard barking its head off in terrific excitement. I looked around to see what was going on. A single young deer approached the peonies, and then changed its mind when it saw me and moved off in the direction of the trees. It was an unexpectedly busy day in the nuns' woods.

The Sparrowhawk made his regular library run and brought back the reserved copy of In the Closet of the Vatican by Frederic Martel. I flipped it open and read the bit about Jacques Maritain. Tragic. This book is 550 pages long--550 pages of juicy gossip, vile oppression, recondite history, and astonishing hypocrisy. It cries out to be read even though I know it will make my head explode. However, I'm reading a rather long ARC for a friend, so that comes first.
