After a string of pretty good sleeping nights, I woke up at 5 after 4 1/2 hours of sleep. Sigh. Came downstairs and waited for it to start getting light. About 7, the Sparrowhawk showed up. "What are YOU doing here?" I said. "I don't want you to be up too." He looked very pathetic and said "Well, I couldn't find the conference I was supposed to be attending, and I just couldn't climb up any more of those stairs." In his dream he had been looking for the building where this conference was to be held, trying to climb an endless stairway, but impeded by a flapping loose sole on his left shoe. The crowd was too dense for him to stop and fix it, and he ended up crawling up the stairs on hands and knees. Then it started to rain, and he had left his umbrella in the other building. I said "Oh honey" and then we wrapped our arms around each other and laughed for a long time with that kind of laughter that sounds a lot like crying. Well, there are worse ways to start the day. The broken shoe is a pretty good dream metaphor for the fact that his left foot doesn't work as well as it used to. If only it could be so easily fixed!

An hour later, I had to take a nap. I slept away most of the morning, but I felt better when I got up. It was such a beautiful day that it was particularly unfortunate to spend so much of it asleep. However, I woke up in time do a few things and spend some time out on the porch enjoying the sunshine and trying to write. I also went for a walk and had a chat with Queenie, and made an appointment for lunch with another friend I haven't seen in awhile. My endoscopy biopsies came back normal. Apparently I have "gastritis," which means my stomach is irritated. Gosh, how helpful to know THAT, she said sarcastically. We'll make another try at getting Morpheus to behave tonight.
