Hail of Shadow
Oct. 20th, 2019 09:32 pmSlept late, did not go to church. Today's service was the kids' Halloween parade, and I'm just not up for dressing up this year. The guest speaker was a guy who runs a charity to foster education in Nepal. It's a very worthwhile idea, and we sponsored a student for a few years. She quit the charity because she got what her parents thought would be a better deal, in the form of a scholarship to an elite school. We decided not to accept another student, both for financial reasons, and because as we worked with the charity, there were just a few things that made us a little uncomfortable. We're happy that we were able to help our student stay in school and find a good opportunity. However, we don't want to hear the pep talk again.
We finished up the cleanup from last night. It was a beautiful day, and we felt a need to get out in it. We went over to the little lake to take a walk up the hill to the big rock, which we haven't done in awhile. We rested on a bench at the top and enjoyed the view over the lake, through the golden dapple of changing leaves. We continued on to a little park at the bottom of the hill, where we again sat down and gazed. We heard a crashing in the bushes, and two deer bounded out and across the road toward the lake. On the way back, I stepped off the edge of the sidewalk in a place where the ground was quite uneven, and tripped. I felt myself losing my balance, and the next thing you know, I fell right over. However, I rolled like a champ, distributing the force across my shoulder and keeping my head well out of contact with hard surfaces. I ended up in sitting position, from which in the old tae kwon do days, I would have been poised to leap to my feet in a single bound. However, on this occasion, I chose to sit for a minute until I checked that nothing was damaged. It turned out I was fine, with just one tiny scrape to the heel of my hand, which made first contact. It's still disconcerting. My stomach is feeling good enough that I've risked taking some Advil, because I think I might be a little sore tomorrow.
