SnowCrest of Celeste
Jan. 3rd, 2020 11:41 pmThe Lumberjack was still not well enough to travel, so it was another quiet day here. Tron wondered what we could do that would be fun. She and the Sparrowhawk and I watched "Blinded by the Light" in the afternoon. It's a sweet little movie, but it made me feel like crying many times. It's so weird. I remember listening on my Walkman to the Boss in the late 70s and early 80s when I was at work, and being swept away by the passionate yearning for a better life--just like the kid in the movie. I remembered being young, I guess. "For the ones who have a notion, a notion deep inside, that it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive. . . ."
We finally cut out and baked the gingerbread cookie dough that has been sitting in the refrigerator. Tron made a gingerbread boy of the Lumberjack, complete with beard and hair, and took it to him on his sickbed. It was favorably received and actually eaten up with zest. Gingerbread is good medicine! I made a gingerbread girl like little me in my dress and pigtails, and then another one where I cut the skirt into bell bottoms and added long hair, my wire-rimmed specs and love beads. And I made a hippie Sparrowhawk to match, with long hair. Then there were lots of conventional gingerbread boys, girls, and angels, along with stars, moons, Christmas trees, unicorns and doves. We thought about dinner and decided to get spicy noodles from the noodles place, along with street fries sprinkled with gochujang, and ramen, and soup. It tasted really good after a week of traditional food. The house smelled good, like cookies and noodles.
After dinner, we played Careers--a game I adored when I was a child, for some reason. I was making lots of money, and I went to the moon! So Tron decided I was Elon Musk. And then she decided that she was John Doe, from "Meet John Doe," and the Sparrowhawk was Johnny Case, from the movie "Holiday" which we had watched recently. Very unfair! They got to be Gary Cooper and Cary Grant, respectively, and I had to be horrid Elon Musk. We paused the game, so it remains to be seen if the Dark Lord Elon triumphs. We paused it to start watching LotR again, because the Sparrowhawk was irked that he didn't remember enough trivia in our earlier game. We watched the Fellowship until they reached Rivendell and the Council of Elrond, and then Tron needed to go to bed, so that's on pause too. The battle between good and evil hangs in suspense, but at least we have cookies.
