I've seen a headline that says lots of people are having weird dreams lately. The article attached purports to explain why, but I haven't read it. I've always had weird dreams. But I have to admit, there are so many lately that I'm having trouble keeping up with them. Last night, the dream world started off with me having my car stolen by someone who hacked my key fob. There were a lot of things in the car, too, because I was in the middle of planning my mother's funeral. Again. Things could only improve after that, which they did in the form of a cake that I baked which looked great when it came out of the oven, but collapsed when I tried to cut it. It had a lovely chocolate ganache filling, which leaked out when it collapsed. Like I care! I would have just eaten it with my fingers and maybe a spoon, and it would have been delicious. But it was supposed to be served at an event, and the presentation, as Paul Hollywood would have said, had some problems.

Then we got to the really amusing part, where I was working for a very exigent, obnoxious boss. She ordered me to arrange a reception for a professional conference. I said I didn't see that in the job description. She huffed at me and let it be known that my job was to do whatever she told me to do. She particularly wanted me to provide a type of cocktail called a Blithe Spirit. (The people in my dreams seem overly obsessed with fancy beverages.) She insisted that the Blithe Spirit was made with an ingredient called Civility Sauce. It was one of those New England-ish kind of condiments like Old Bay seasoning or cocktail sauce, that are considered spicy by the kind of people who eat codfish cakes and boiled potatoes. I was pretty sure that a Blithe Spirit should be tart and sparkling--perhaps something like an Aviator or a Corpse Reviver, maybe with a hint of absinthe or some other arcane liqueur. Definitely NOT with Civility Sauce.

When I woke up, I googled Blithe Spirit and didn't find any cocktails with that name. There should be one. I realized I was dreaming about my mother's funeral because the month of May is coming up. It will be the first anniversary of her death. I was grateful that we already had her funeral and will never have to do it again. Not even in a dream.

The rest of the day was damp and grey. It was a day of satisfaction anyway, because it's the Nipper's birthday! The Norton Shakespeare we sent him, at his request, arrived on time. He has worn out the one he had. And the day took a turn for the better when the doorbell signaled a delivery. Godiva had a sale, with free shipping, which I had mentioned to the Sparrowhawk because I made use of it to order some chocolate for the Dr. Nurse household. He took advantage of this information to order the biggest box of chocolate I've ever seen. "I had to, to get the full discount," he said innocently. Eating chocolate and watching "Practical Magic" again. It's almost as good as the Chocolate Collapse Cake with a Blithe Spirit chaser.
