This being the first Mother's Day without my mother, I wasn't sure how it would go, but thanks to the Sparrowhawk and my kids, it was a pretty happy day. The Sparrowhawk made me pancakes for breakfast, with bananas, blackberries, and bacon--all the things beginning with the letter b that we happened to have left in the refrigerator. Tron sent me a card that not only unfolded by also had a button to press, whereupon it repeated an inspiring and flattering speech! I think I'd better press the button every day, at least until the battery gives out.

On Friday when we were cleaning up the yard preparatory to the big freeze, we cut up a lot of dead rose canes and the sticks I had used to hold up my bean vines last year. It made a big pile. I originally wanted to burn it the outdoor firepit, but these days you have to apply to the city for a permit to make a fire in your back yard, and we don't have such a permit yet. Since it was going to be so cold, I thought we might just burn them in the fireplace. A cold rain fell all night, and on and off during the day, and at one point it actually hailed! So I felt justified in starting a fire in the fireplace. We spent a pleasant afternoon drinking tea by the fire, although I had to jump up many times to replenish the fuel. I felt quite Daddy-ish as I stuffed flammables into the grate, and I could almost hear my mother's voice protesting--"Oh dear! Do be careful!" There's nothing like a little pyromania to drive off sadness.

The Diva and Tron both called and chatted with me. Tron was cooking and showed us her panful of potatoes and bacon on Facetime. The Diva said they were having bacon for dinner too. It seems to be a Mother's Day theme. We had a roast chicken bundle from one of the local restaurants that is open for takeout. The Sparrowhawk ordered it online and was given a number to put on his windshield. He drove up and the server ran out with his bag and handed it to him curbside. It contained a delicious lemon herb chicken, potatoes and gravy, collard greens with carrots, dill coleslaw, and green bean casserole, and cookies for dessert. It was very delicious. We ate by the fireside while listening to the Revels sing "The Wild Mountain Thyme." After dinner, the Philosopher called, and then we watched the stirring denouement of "Clouds of Witness." Lots of old British guys in wigs, some execrably fake American accents and a fake plane ride across the Atlantic in the nick of time!
