May. 21st, 2020

Another beautiful day. The sky was blue with just a cloud or two, and the trees are all in leaf. The leaves are gradually thickening and becoming more their summer colors, and leaving spring's frailty and translucence behind. The oak leaves are still whitish and pale, and small like squirrel's ears. Redbuds are blooming and the tree by our driveway has dropped petals all over the hood of the car in a very decorative manner. I was out weeding in the front flower bed for an hour or so. I pulled up thistles and baby maple trees, which are everywhere, and cleared the grass out of the lavender bush. I tied up some daffodil leaves in a bunch with twine so they wouldn't shade out the little bits of bergamot and achillea that are coming back up. Last year, I thought they were dead! I hope they will thrive this year.

We sat out in the back yard with our books and a cup of tea. In the cupboard, I had found a box of breakfast bars I bought for my mother at the Duchess's instigation. They were revoltingly healthful and yet at the same time, horridly artificial tasting, and my mother quite rightly disdained them, so they had come home with me. I finally remembered to put them out for the birds and squirrels. I saw a squirrel coming repeatedly to the stone where I had placed them, and carrying them away bit by bit. I hope they won't give him a tummy ache. I came up with some potential plot ideas for my WIP. I took my father's old suit that his grandmother sewed for him by hand, and my mother's wedding outfit, a grey suit that I've never thought was AT ALL appropriate for a wedding, out of the attic and put them into the storage tub for woolens that has cedar in it. I tried to sort out a box of old photos from the attic, but it's hopeless until I get some more transparent photo pages so I can put the ones I want into a binder or something.

The Sparrowhawk had a PT appointment, and took a test of some balance and strength things. He scored 28 out of 28, which means he did very well. I'm happy about that! They're going to give him a refresher course on making BIG movements and LOUD speech, and practicing keeping his head up and his shoulders back. I fixed some soup and toasted cheese and assorted odds and ends for dinner, because he was feeling tired after the workout they gave him.
