Weevil of Simmer
Jul. 13th, 2020 09:43 pmWe actually got over 8 hours of sleep last night. Also, the temperature and humidity went down. This combination made me feel amazingly better. I thought I just go outside and get my plants in the ground, then do the grocery shopping. Oh gosh . . . just a TINY bit overambitious . . . ya think?? I went outside and discovered that some CREATURE OF DARKNESS had bitten the tops off my echinacea, my coneflowers, and my blanketflower. It had gamboled through the line of pots and knocked over the roses and the tomatoes, and it bit the tips off the tomato plants, and it yanked my wild geranium right out of the pot and then threw it on the ground, where it was shriveling up. It also ate ALL the daylily flowers and buds. Every single one, just nipped off like candy. I blame the deer, though I suppose it's possible there was a groundhog or something. Honestly, people think deer are so sweet and adorable . . . . Hmph. Where's a nice wolf pack when you need one?
Anyway, I repotted the tomatoes in bigger pots and parked them atop the gravel strip by the basement windows on the south side of the house. I can only hope the deer won't get them. I planted the Pearly Gates climbing rose by the trellis with the others. I thought about where to put the Julia Child yellow floribunda, and decided maybe the corner of the fence would be best. But first, I attacked the invasive volunteer rose that was in there. I had to dig it up with the shovel and pry it loose and clip the root with my clippers. Probably an axe would have done better! I ripped up a tree of heaven seedling by the roots and waved it over my head, growling "Gotcha, you little bastard!" I also tore up a whole lot of ivy and nightshade that was creeping in. The Sparrowhawk says my Kurgan genes sparkle when I'm attacking my enemies. When I had cleared out the area, I planted the rose. I hope it will do well. The Hansa rugosa and the other floribunda that are in there are doing all right. Then I watered everything and packed the weeds into two garbage bags and put my tools away. I'd been at it for a couple of hours and that was all I had time for. Needless to say, I didn't make it to the grocery store.
When I came inside, I had a message from Queenie, so I called her back and we talked for awhile. They're home now. Mr. Science responded to the weekly siblings check-in with the news that his oldest child is getting married on Saturday! It will be a very small and informal ceremony. We'll have to celebrate long distance. He seems very happy about it, and we're all thrilled for them. Later, the Diva called while she was out on a walk, and we had a lovely chat. Kansas is going to fly to Utah to play the dad in a Hallmark Christmas movie! They're flying him first class so he won't have to sit too close to anyone, and taking all precautions on set. I love it. It gives me something to look forward to for this winter. I can see myself making popcorn and giggling. Not at Kansas, of course! He is a fine actor! He's also the best possible dad in real life, so I'm sure he can use method acting to portray the best dad on film, too.
