SandLizard of Simmer
Jul. 29th, 2020 09:59 pmSleeping was a mixed bag. I'm happy to say that it rained. Just before four am, thunder rumbled, and the rain set in for a nice steady downpour that lasted the better part of an hour. I was so happy that it rained. I was going to say that I made it happen by watering my plants, but then I saw a post from a local friend who said SHE watered her garden and made it rain, so I'll leave the honors to her. I was not happy, however, that I was awake for the whole thing. I resisted actually getting up like grim death and eventually went back to sleep. I thought of the Fountains of Wayne line, "Wrapped around my pillow like a prawn."
Anyway, I got up late and had to revise my schedule. I mixed up the lemon-blueberry coffee cake I'd been intending to make. When it was done, I put a few hunks of the still-warm result in a container, and took that and a fantasy novel I'd finished reading over to Dr. Nurse's house. She's going on vacation with the entire Duchess clan next week, and I thought she might like some more beach reading. She's working hard on her lectures for next semester. Hopefully the cake inspired a coffee break. We chatted for a few minutes in her front yard with our masks on. When I got home, I took out the beef brisket that had been pickling away in the refrigerator and put it in a big pot to simmer for hours. I thought I'd be starting it early enough to have for dinner, but it takes a long time to get it fork tender. We ended up having leftovers for dinner--easy enough because I'm still not eating a lot. I worked on my revisions outside in the beautiful sunny, breezy afternoon. After dinner, I cleaned up the kitchen and sliced up the brisket. I put one portion in the freezer for later. I also saved the broth. It's quite tasty and I think will make a nice soup if I add potatoes or barley or something bland to soak up the saltiness.
