Jul. 31st, 2020

The curse of 4 am struck again. I woke up suddenly, thinking murder noodles, murder noodles. Damn the internet. I then thought "No, no, I DON'T LIKE SNAKES. Brain, I command you to bring me some other thought." My brain then helpfully replied, "You know, coronavirus will probably go on for the rest of the year. There's no chance there will be a vaccine before then. You won't be able to fly. And it will be Michigan winter, so a long road trip would be foolhardy. Know what that means? You'll probably be alone for Christmas." At that point, I was having asthma problems, probably because of all the weeding, and was generally uncomfortable. I gave up and realized I was done for as far as sleeping. I went downstairs and was up until dawn. Eventually I went back to sleep for a couple more hours, so I wasn't completely groggy. But my day was slightly bollixed up.

However, I cheered up to the best of my ability and went off to do the grocery shopping. I put it off until today because the ad flyer said that today only, I could get rotisserie chickens for 5 dollars each. Well, you can't beat that. I got two chickens, and a big pile of other stuff. And had a friendly chat about Stargate when the guy at the butcher counter saw my t-shirt while he was weighing out my fresh lake trout. I had a struggle to fit it all into the refrigerator, but I did it. Then I worked on my revisions while the Sparrowhawk had a Zoom chat with the friends from high school who all worked on the literary magazine together.

The Sparrowhawk cooked the trout in the oven with lemon and herbs, and we ate it with green beans, salad, and fried potatoes. It was delicious. Salmon from the ocean is all very well, but fish that comes out of the Great Lakes--lake trout, perch, whitefish, walleye--tastes good to me in a whole different way. Of course, you can get salmon out of the Lakes too, but for some reason it's not widely sold at the grocery store. I guess it's mostly a game fish and people eat their own catch. I noticed that today, three of my Romano bean seeds have come up, too! Even if no more come up, that's still 10% of an 8 year old packet that were still viable. And the other package has come up almost 100%. So, don't throw away old seeds without checking them out. They might still be alive in there!
