Last night there was a terrific windstorm that battered the branches all night. At one point, we heard a series of sharp cracks that sounded very much like gunfire, but we both concluded independently that it was probably branches cracking. In the morning, there were some branches down on the neighbor’s yard, so that probably was it. Other things kept me awake too. News regarding our sick friend, that they are dying, By now they may already have died, but I haven’t heard. I couldn’t help feeling that pain. The roaring and rattling of the wind. Stomach pain. Bad dreams, in which I shouted at people, but they still wouldn’t listen. When I start shouting in my dreams, it’s never a good sign. I finally gave up and got up and stayed up until it started to get light. I didn’t want to go back to bed, but I knew I’d have to have a little more sleep or I’d be good for nothing. I would have slept even a little longer, but our reclusive neighbor’s dog encountered some other dog while out for a walk, and a loud and persistent yap-fest ensued.

Once I got up, it was a beautiful day: sunny and breezy, another day of lingering late summer. I thought it had rained a lot in the night, but I was mistaken. I could see by the wilting of leaves that my bean plants needed more water. I refreshed them while the Sparrowhawk grilled steak and cooked corn on the cob. After dinner, he went to take a shower, and I thought I’d just put away a few things. I ended up cleaning up the whole kitchen. I didn’t really want to, but it’s always nice when it’s done. Then I got a call from a friend who needed my advice—or thought they needed it. I gave it to them, loud and clear, several times. They appeared not to hear what I was saying, and continued to drive the perseveration-mobile right on over my foot and onto the highway of crazy. Sigh. I wish them luck. Bless their heart. Tomorrow the temperature is supposed to plummet. It will be interesting to see if that happens. I hope I sleep so I can make better use of the next day!
