It was another cool, damp, cloudy day--third in a row, I think. I spent it mostly hustling around getting things ready for our trip to the lake to celebrate the Sparrowhawk's 70th birthday! Wow, what a long time! Our ambition is to stick it out for at least 16 more years, because then he would have known me longer than anyone, including my parents. I realize that may not work out, but even if it doesn't, I'm very happy that we've made it this far.

I went to the store to get provisions. They were having a big sale on roses, so I bought him three bunches: one yellow, one luscious pale pink, and one bright red--not the dark blood red, but red like fire. When I put them in vases, the yellow ones looked kind of lonely, so I added goldenrod and ferns from the back yard, and now it's delightfully casual and colorful. The pink and red roses look quite elegant enough, together in one big vase. I made a chocolate cake and cut it in half--half to take with us, and half to stay in the refrigerator until we get back. Then I realized that we were out of bread already, so I made four big loaves of bread. We sent two more cards off--a birthday and an anniversary this time, so happy ones. I cut up a lot of carrots and celery to take with us, and washed a bunch of grapes. Tomorrow I have to finish assembling all the food and put the cold things in the cooler. We are packing as if for an expedition to some undiscovered country. It would be a lot easier if we could go to grocery stores and restaurants more easily, but it's complicated these days, and much easier to be able to make our own snacks and sandwiches. That way, the complication is taken care of ahead of time!
