Dec. 13th, 2020

Yesterday, it rained all night and most of the day. Late in the afternoon, the rain turned into some kind of weird semifreddo rain-ish frosty thing that briefly whitened the grass, but didn't stay long. We both had, simultaneously, one of those crappy nights when you only sleep for four hours or so and wake up too long before dawn. Not that it's very difficult to wake before dawn, since it technically doesn't happen until 8:05. And it wasn't much to look at when it did. The rain clouds turned a slightly lighter shade of dark grey. So we drank tea and moped around for awhile, and then went back to bed. Thus the morning canceled itself.

We got a bit of this and that done after waking up AGAIN. The Sparrowhawk cleaned the downstairs bathroom. I started on cleaning our bathroom. And at this point, I was so sleepy and my stomach hurt so much that I gave up on blogging yesterday and went to bed.

Luckily, I woke up early feeling better, and got started right away on making the Lucy Cats, in honor of St. Lucy's Day, formerly the shortest day in the year. They are saffron buns with raisins and currents in them, and can be shaped into something that possibly resembles a cat. It takes them a long time to rise properly, especially in the cold weather. They came out very well this year--nice and soft, with a crispy crust. Then, since the oven was hot already, I made barbecue sauce and prepared the barbecued chicken with sweet potatoes, onions, sweet peppers, and carrots, with sage and thyme, jerk seasoning, and some turmeric, and put it in to cook. I knew I'd be having a nice long chat with Moonmoth and the Nonesuch at cooking time, so I made dinner early and we just heated it up with some rice after my Zoom. It was delicious. I fear I've started cooking as if our guests are already here! Oh well--perhaps there will be leftovers for them. Somewhere in there I found time to scrub the bathtub. Four days until they get here! I'm not quite panicking yet.

Did you know that you can kiss a rose? It's a chaste, cool, fragrant kind of a kiss. You can kiss a lily too--but lilies are saucy for all their pale, aloof appearance, and will mark you with bright orange pollen for your impudence. I've been carrying my beautiful flowers from one room to another depending on where I'm going to sit, so I can gaze on them for as long as they last. That's how I know.
