SnowCrest of Celeste
Jan. 3rd, 2021 09:15 pmI wish it were possible to make a New Year's resolution to sleep more! But if that were possible, I would already have done it. Normally I can make it through the day on five hours, but this morning, I felt that the light hurt my eyes and I was going to literally fall unconscious. So I had to take an extra nap, which screwed up my morning and made me feel that I'd never really awakened all day. I originally woke up because I was being stalked in a dream by a very reprehensible person who had a habit of pretending to have car trouble and then kidnapping anyone who stopped to help. I rudely left an artists' group meeting in the middle of someone's long-winded description of his latest art project, because I didn't want to have a predictable schedule, on account of the stalker. I wanted to warn the others to watch out for the red Mercedes, but I knew they'd think I was crazy. Meanwhile, the Sparrowhawk was dreaming of trying to give people needed information about health care costs, but having to buy a mask, and not being able to make his phone work to pay for it. I woke up from my nap because I was dreaming that the laundry had been hung outside, but there was a terrific storm, and I had to rush out and bring it in. Then it was hung in the living room, but too close to the fireplace, and my socks had caught fire. Stalked and menaced, phones not working, socks on fire. Hey, brain, stop living in 2020!
The nice part about cooking so much for the kids is that we have leftovers for days! I've been eating stir fried vegetables and rice with a little ham, out of consideration for my stomach, but we also have bratwurst and spicy black-eyed peas, and a big container of spaghetti sauce with meat that I dressed up with wine and herbs and extra peppers and onions. And in the freezer, we have a large portion of leftover stew for the meat pie filling, which turned out particularly well this year.
A few years ago, I switched from making resolutions to just making lists to remind myself of things I might LIKE to do more often in the new year. I'm always thinking that I would like to read more, and if I did read more, I wouldn't have to resolve to cut down on my screen time, because that would happen naturally. So I'm happy to say that I finally finished The Songs of Trees, by David George Haskell. It's an absolutely wonderful book, and the only reason it took a long time to read it was that it's lyrical but dense. One night while the kids were here, they and the Sparrowhawk wanted to watch "Aliens." I didn't want that much stress before bed, so I stayed by the fire, and read most of "The Witchwood Crown," by Tad Williams, while much screaming sounded faintly from the other room. I loved the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy long ago, and now I'm determined to read the remaining two volumes of its sequel trilogy, The Last King of Osten Ard. Like everything by Tad Williams, they are extraordinarily long, so it will indeed be a grand feat of reading if I succeed.
