The most enormously tall bouquet arrived on the front porch today--an early birthday present from the Sparrowhawk. It's called "The One and Only" and it really is. It has Stargazer lilies in it, which are opening in the warmth and breathing out their sweet fragrance. I have lots of little packages stacked up, waiting for the day to be opened.

I finished my story. It's just a bit under 11,000 words, which I think is just about a perfect length. Of course, I still have to go back through it and fix anything that needs fixing, perhaps add a bit here and there. And then the editor has to have his say. He probably won't look at it for awhile, because I know he's already busy with a couple of other projects. I feel good about that. I had fun writing it.

I decided to finish up some leftovers instead of cooking a whole new dinner. I cut up remnants of the pork loin and dressed them up with some barbecue sauce and the tag end of a jar of salsa, and simmered them to let the flavor permeate. Then I found a couple of zucchini that needed to be cooked, so I made my old faithful stir-fried zucchini and walnuts. Last time I did this, I went too heavy on the sesame oil, so this time I used soy sauce and less sesame oil. It still seemed lacking in something, so I drizzled in a little honey, and that hit the perfect blend of salty and sweet. We had leftover rice and green beans to add. It all went together as a really tasty combination of flavors, and the Sparrowhawk enjoyed it.

I dreamed I was eating at the Student Union in Lawrence, Kansas, with Jim Gunn. He used to eat lunch there just about every day. In the dream, he had started eating most of his meals there, because of being so old. We had a pleasant conversation, and then he got up to go, because it was getting late for him. In real life, he was a very reserved and proper person. In the dream, I said to him, "On this occasion, I think a kiss on the cheek would be appropriate." And he allowed me to hug him and kiss his cheek in parting. As I recall, I did kiss him on the cheek the last time I saw him alive, and he seemed happy with that. I'm glad I got to say an affectionate goodbye in the dream world, too.

The Nipper and his family are still recuperating slowly. Very happy about that, too.
