Torpor of Sleet
Feb. 1st, 2021 09:34 pmFeeling that I'm not really doing anything worth recording . . . . But at least January has come to n end. It's my birth month, and Tron's too, so normally I try not to be negative about it, however icy and gray and post-Christmassy it may be. But this year . . . Why fight it! Embrace the dark side! At any rate, today is the 70th birthday of my dearest and most long-term friend, Deb. So I'm extra glad we made it to February. This long a life is something to be celebrated, and this long a friendship is extra special! Trumpet fanfare, please! Sadly for Deb, she had to start her morning at 4 am to get the Prussian to a medical procedure that was pretty stressful. I called her this morning to wish her a happy birthday, and was grateful that I apparently timed it just right--after her emergency nap, after she retrieved her phone from the car, after the doctor's call to say everything went well, but before the call to say the Prussian was ready to be ferried home. I hope he's home and in good shape at this point. I know from experience that just getting the loved one back home makes up for all the tsuris that goes on before that. Nevertheless, I think we're all owed a do-over for this birthday and for so many other special events from the past year. So. Many. Do-overs.
The sun came out again today, and we went for a walk under a sky so blue we just had to stop and gaze at it occasionally. I waved to a passing person and called "Hi!" because I was sure I recognized her. But when she apologized for not recognizing me, and we exchanged names, I realized I didn't know her at all. Oh well! I always think it's better to say hello to someone I don't know than to NOT say hello to someone I do know. Later in the walk, we met a nun who called out greetings to me--but when we exchanged names, it turned out we didn't know each other either! I have now made the acquaintance of Sister Loreena, but I can't swear I'd recognize her again if I saw her without a mask.
Yesterday I did laundry and cooked a tremendous pork roast with lots of vegetables that looked as if we were expecting half a dozen guests. If only! I cut up a couple of potatoes, a sweet potato, a couple of onions, a couple of apples, a big chunk of cabbage, sauteed them all with savory, sage, and a sprinkle of jerk spice, and then put them in a pan with the pork loin. I didn't have any barbecue sauce, so I improvised a glaze from hot pepper jam, maple syrup, malt vinegar, and a dash of ketchup to thicken it up a bit. It came out really good. This is one of the old stand-bys that I cook that's different every time, and very satisfying when it comes out well.
Dr. Nurse and Mr. Dr. Nurse stopped by to drop off a lovely post-birthday gift--a bunch of sunflowers and a couple of slices of something delicious. I'm not sure what it is, but I think it's cheesecake. At any rate, it is a creamy mousse-like chocolate with a nut layer at the bottom and a chocolate and raspberry glaze on top. Yum! We chatted with them out on the porch with our masks on for just a few minutes. So nice to see even half of their faces!
