One of the places we visited in Ishpeming was the Rare Earth Cafe, a totally unexpected hippie emporium on the rundown streets of this old mining town. Ms. Science kept urging me to buy things, because she and Mr. Science apparently felt an obligation to pump some dollars into this depressed region. So I ended up with some all natural body lotion that smells of citrus-mint and is pleasant enough, and a tie-dyed t-shirt in shades of blue that reminded me of the lake. It reeks of patchouli and gives me weird flashbacky feelings, but I'm sure that will wear off after it gets washed a few times. There's another chapter for my memoirs: Reeking of Patchouli in Ishpeming. The town also boasts a place called Congress Pizza. I ordered the chicken pesto pizza, and the others had pepperoni with cudighi, a type of locally made sausage. The thin crust is flaky and delicious. So now you know where to eat should you ever find yourselves in Ishpeming.

Down here under the bridge, we're having another spell of weirdly humid weather. This afternoon, we had a severe weather watch, resulting in nothing more than a downpour here, but east of us, there was a minor tornado. The air quality index was 120 at one point, which I realize would be sniffed at by those in the smoke zone, but it's still not good for people with asthma. Up in the UP, the smoke detector went off one night, and my brother thought it was because of the smoke blowing eastward. We could see the haze and smell it occasionally. It's the same down here. They said the rain might have smoke particles in it. Today I put away things from our trip (finally), did laundry and put away laundry, and took the house plants off the table where I had arranged them with extra water, and put them back in their places by the window. This was pursuant to actually using the table for eating again, which we might do someday. Because of the weather, I did not do much outside, but I did go out briefly and pick a Dragon's Egg cucumber off one of the plants I grew. It is as advertised: smooth, pale, and ovoid. Okay, so maybe it's more like a goose egg than a dragon's egg, but I'm still tickled by it. I've put it in the refrigerator, so it probably won't hatch.
