Nov. 27th, 2021 10:50 pmI may have neglected to mention that I got a late-night phone call from my friend in MN to say that her husband died. I had been expecting that, but she wasn't. Sometimes the people closest to it don't see it, because they're too involved in all the arrangements of the moment. I talked to her and her daughter more later. That cast a little shadow over the holiday. I remember him sitting in his chair with a cat on his lap, smiling shyly and listening while she and I talked and laughed. And later, he'd take me out in their big back yard and proudly show me his gardening arrangements, and tell me to pick some green beans and tomatoes to take home. The world has lost someone special, and my heart aches for a gentle soul who didn't deserve that kind of suffering. The nurses held his hands and told him they'd be his family for the night, because his real family couldn't make it there in time.
Friday would have been my father's 98th birthday. When Mr. Dr. Nurse came over to give the Sparrowhawk his piano lesson, Dr. Nurse herself dropped in as well just to say hi. We didn't have much to offer--just some tea and a little coffee cake. It was nice to visit with them both. Mr. Dr. Nurse had some interesting commentary on Bach. On hearing that their Thanksgiving hosts a) didn't give them any leftovers, and b) didn't serve any side dishes, I insisted on giving them some of our green bean casserole. Come on--the sides are the best part! We'll see them next week at the wedding!
Today, we had lunch with another pair of old friends who don't have blog names. He is the Philosopher's godfather, and he and the Sparrowhawk were each other's best men. He and the Sparrowhawk lived in an apartment together with some other guys, and then he lived in our commune house for awhile too. We've known each other since we were all 19 or so. At one point, there was a big hiatus in the relationship because reasons, but a rapprochement gradually took place. They were in town for a niece's wedding, and we'll see them next week at the wedding, too.
It snowed today. The first batch melted away, but late in the day, it started coming down again, and I think it was the first snow that may stick for at least a day. Since tomorrow is the first Sunday of Advent, that means tonight is the vigil, and therefore I gave myself permission to start playing the Christmas CDs. We're still eating up the leftovers, and have made surprising inroads into the pie.
