Jun. 2nd, 2022

I see it's been a long time again! Just a quick catch-up post to say we had a lovely visit with Tron and the Lumberjack, and then on Wednesday, they left for Chicago and we drove to the lake to celebrate (belatedly) our 51st anniversary. But not before enjoying a visit from Dr. Nurse and Dr. Music with their new baby girl, who I'm tentatively calling Birdchild because of her real name, which has some avian elements. Oh my gosh, she's so tiny! So darling! the Sparrowhawk and I took turns holding her while the new parents had some snacks, left over from the delicious charcuterie board that Tron made for us the day before.

Today was a beautiful day, 61 degrees but deceptively sunny, with a deliriously blue sky. We rather optimistically thought we would walk the Lighthouse Trail, something we haven't done in awhile. It's about a 5 mile round trip. One always forgets that it's rather grueling at the best of times, because it goes over open sand much of the way, and there are a couple of steep dune climbs. It's also quite beautiful, though, especially on a day that isn't blazing hot. Well . . . we made it . . . and I would say we weren't quite as footsore and bedraggled as we were last year when we decided to do the whole Logging Trail loop on a 90+ degree day. We feel triumphant because it was quite an accomplishment under the circumstances. We went rather slowly and took a LOT of opportunities to sit down. It was a moment of rejoicing when we arrived at the lighthouse. I was slightly concerned that we wouldn't make it back. I sent the Sparrowhawk to sit on the best bench--under the cottonwoods, in the shade, facing the water--while I went inside and bought some cold pop from the nice ladies who run the tiny gift shop. After a good rest, a drink, and some sustaining snacks from my magic backpack, we felt ready to go home the easy way. My original desire was to walk home via the beach and maybe have a swim, but it was clear that prudence was the better part of valor this time. We trudged back via the lighthouse road, which is nice and flat, and enjoyed the vistas of the interdunal ponds along the way. We got a bite to eat, watched the sunset, took a hot shower, and are ready for more adventures tomorrow.
