I never nattered about my garden plants, which I put into the ground the morning we left town. I had such good plans for my garden, which all involved NOT being sick in the months of April/May, which are garden prep and planting times. However, with a lot of help from Tron, I got the raised beds weeded last week. Then I hauled the finished compost from our compost tumbler to the garden in a wheelbarrow and spread it around. I decided that, instead of my elaborate ideas about growing my own plants from heritage seed, etc. etc., I'd just go to the garden store and buy whatever was available. Strangely, they didn't have their normal supplies of things, so my purchases were even more ad hoc that I imagined. I thought I'd better get short-season tomatoes, if I could, hoping they'd actually ripen unlike last year. But, at the same time, I didn't want ALL cherry tomatoes, because that is boring. I got one cherry tomato plant, and one Early Girl. After that I went nuts and bought three others whose names I can't even remember. One of them had a marker in it that said it was Cherokee Purple--a tomato I love, but which I didn't intend to buy. We'll see what actually turns up. Then I gave up and bought an eggplant for the other pot I had ready.

I was in a hurry to get out of there, because it was full of obnoxious people barging around with their giant carts, and I was in danger of becoming annoyed and saying things like "Excuse YOU." I had imagined buying zucchini, which supposedly never fail to produce, even though they certainly have failed for me. But they didn't have any! This is quite unheard of. They had some other thing that was a cross between a zucchini and a pattypan, and seemed acceptable, so I got two of those, and two cucumbers. The herb selection was pitiful, but I got a couple of parsleys and basils and one sad-looking dill plant that I hope will perk up.

On Wednesday morning, they were all sitting in the back yard when I woke up too early. I decided I could just manage to get them planted in time to clean up before the Dr. Nurse family arrived. I popped them into their spots, and also planted a package of purple pod bush beans and another packet of French beans with a vining habit. Whew. Very grubby and sweaty, but victorious.

When we got home last night, they were looking wilted, as I said, but my quick watering helped them get by until it rained in the wee hours. They are looking pretty good today. Still no bean shoots, but that's not surprising. Today, I made a quick trip to the store to stock up on mostly fresh vegetables and fruit for Tron and the Lumberjack's return. Then I had a Zoom to catch up with the Nonesuch. The kids arrived just as I was signing off. They both got a snack and had a rest--pretty tired after an exciting weekend and drive. I cooked a dish of cabbage stuffed with brown rice and various chopped vegetables, seasoned with paprika, celery seed and caraway seed, and simmered in tomato. For those who don't like cabbage (Tron) I made some mashed potatoes and broccoli. Also a large salad, and some leftover sausage and steak sliced up. The cabbage thing came out very nicely, testified to by the fact that the Lumberjack had several helpings. I was pleased.
