Jan. 13th, 2023 10:07 pmI got out for a brief walk today while the Sparrowhawk was at the gym. It was brisk! In the upper 20s and felt colder. But I had a sweater on under my jacket, and in spite of the lack of sunlight, I quite enjoyed it. We thought we wouldn't be Zooming with Deb and the Prussian, because we got late-breaking news that they were going to visit grandchildren in Georgia. However, as it turned out, the Prussian didn't feel up to it, so we Zoomed with him while Deb waited for a tardy air crew and resisted the blandishments of the overbooked airline to sell her seat. She said if they'd offered her $400 in cash, she would have been tempted, but she wasn't going to sell out a chance to see the grandchildren for a pack of assorted gift cards of that value.
I worked on the novel some more. Bit by bit . . . . Of course, what I want is to expand it by a few more words, and instead, every change I make involves cutting out words. I can't help it! This sentence must go! At least I wasn't horribly sleepy this afternoon. Surprising, since I woke up out of sound sleep after a busy dream. We were in a war zone, and the time had come to evacuate various people who weren't combat ready. It was my job to go around and fill out the tags on all their luggage with the correct numbers. Various people decided to "help" me, and they were screwing up my system. Typical.
And now, the real point of this post--the only thing that lured me into composing it--is to mention that I made a soup. I had some leftover fish that was not very inspiring. So I sauteed a chopped onion and a couple of potatoes, chopped up the fish and threw that in, added chopped fresh cilantro, some frozen peas that were loitering in the freezer, chicken stock, a dash of salt, and a splash of cream and cooked it till the potatoes were done. This took less than twenty minutes to prep, and I have to say it was quite delicious for a cold day. I added some green beans and some cheesy toast as accompaniments. The peas and cilantro made a nice hit of green to contrast with the otherwise pale colors of the soup. I always feel smug when I create what is essentially fast food from found materials.
