I read a thing online that advised people who are not sleeping to do something they called "savoring." It means to mentally relive a pleasant experience, like a day at the beach or a walk in the mountains, making sure to go over each detail--hence, "savoring." Supposedly this will relax one and lead to sleep. What I do when I'm awake at 3 or 4 am . . . well, to be honest what I usually do is mentally thrash around and torment myself like Gerard Manley Hopkins, only not as poetically. But when I wise up and realize this is not going anywhere good, THEN what I do is first of all I pray for everyone I love and various other people who might be in need. If that doesn't wear me out, then I do exactly what this internet sleep pundit described with this fancy name. So, go me. I already thought of that. However, I don't usually use a real life event, because that just leads to worries and regrets and stuff. Instead I have several imaginary journeys. This is even better, because I can make everything look exactly the way I want it. It still doesn't always make me sleep, but at least it's a nice trip.

My soap order from The Soap Opera came in the mail. They had a sale, with free shipping. I love fancy soap, so I fell for this kind of hard. Oo, the box when opened was a delight. They had packed it up so attractively. I have soap for a million years now, but it looks so great, and it smells wonderful, too. I really think I should just keep it somewhere accessible and smell it every few hours. It's like aromatherapy. I needed a new bath bar, and I think that anointing my body with fragrant suds from hand-made British soap labeled "Joy to the World" should remind me to rejoice every morning.

Today I finally had time to make two nice bunches of leeks into soup. Leeks, onions, potatoes, chicken stock. It's just that simple, but it tastes so good. This time I also threw in some broccoli that I had cooked just a little too much. It was kind of soft, but it was fine when pureed into the soup. It started snowing in the afternoon, and it will go on snowing all night and into the day, so I foresee more shoveling in my future. I also cooked dinner: hamburgers, zucchini and mushrooms with black bean and garlic sauce, potatoes and carrots, salad and sliced tomatoes. I combed through a few more chapters of the book. There are only three more chapters to go.

It's Tron's birthday today! She's in Florida on a girls' trip with friends from high school. She came into the world in the middle of an icy cold night when the hospital was nearly empty, so quiet and peaceful. And they let us go home the next day! I couldn't believe my luck. What a special day that was, what a lot of joy she brought with her!
