Hey, yinzers! We're in Pixburg!
Jun. 9th, 2023 09:57 pmWell, we made it to Pittsburgh. To slightly west of the city, technically Monroeville. The park where The Tempest, as directed by our Nipper, will be performed is in this area. It was easier for us to get ourselves here than to go to the fancy hotel downtown and have to drive through the city. We're kinda doing this the easy way because the Sparrowhawk has an aversion to driving in Pittsburgh. As any sane person would. Although the Nipper does a great job, I think it's by necessity rather than preference. My brother also drives around the city like a boss, when he isn't riding his bicycle, but no one would really call him entirely sane. I was doing the second leg of the trip, so I was very happy to stay on 76 and go around. It all came back to me! Driving in Pennsylvania seemed so weird when I arrived from Texas. Everything goes up and down and round and round, and the roads are narrow and bordered by cliffs and ravines, and occasionally you have cheery signs like "FALLING ROCKS." I always wonder what good it does to warn people of this sort of thing. Should I watch for them? What am I going to do if I see one? You can't get out of the way, because there's nowhere to go.
We wandered out of the hotel to see if there were any sidewalks, because we didn't want to climb back into the car to find dinner. We found one, even though the road was zipping past right next to it in a rather alarming fashion. We went around the corner and saw an Eat 'N Park, and across the street from it, an old stone church on top of a hill, with an intriguing graveyard spread across the bosom of the hill. Then we walked downhill and picked our way through a couple of parking lots and past the cannabis dealer and found an Italian restaurant, very old and a bit sketchy-looking. The people were very nice, though, and I figured I couldn't go too far wrong with some grilled salmon. We wended our weary way back up the hill to our room, where I drank a lot of ice water. Tomorrow we'll meet the Nipper and family for lunch and then go see the play!
Edited to add: EAST of the city. East, of course. My bad.
