LongDays of Zenith
Jul. 3rd, 2023 10:21 pmThe curse of not sleeping continues, although it morphs into different forms. This morning, I slept consecutively, but only until about 5, at which point I got up because my stomach was giving me a hard time. I was downstairs until nearly 7, at which point the Sparrowhawk descended from on high like an angel and invited me to ascend and try sleeping some more. I wasn't feeling very optimistic, but I did finally fall asleep again for another hour or so. When I woke up, he had gone to his money counting job, leaving a nice cup of tea for me to warm up and drink. I was surprised that Queenie hadn't called yet. I called her, and found her on the road home from Miami, where they had been visiting the Gazelle in her new apartment. We had a shorter chat than usual, because they were about to make a pit stop. The Fireman, who is in fact a retured fireman, is not enthusiastic about fireworks displays, having seen too much carnage.
I got a late start on accomplishing anything. I noticed we were running out of bread and mixed up a fresh batch. Last time, I didn't put enough water in the bowl, so I ended up with only three loaves. This time, I overdid it, and had to use the WHOLE bag of bread flour, and in the end had five loaves. "Happy medium" seems not to be a concept I work with easily. While they were rising, I made pie crust and put it in the refrigerator to chill. Just before the bread came out, I rolled out the crust, added cherry filling, and put the pie into the hot oven. The stove was working overtime. I figured it was better to do baking today rather than tomorrow, because it will be really hot tomorrow. After having rain all weekend, we now have hot and damp rather than hot and dry. Not that I'm complaining. The rain was badly needed. I seem to have spent all my available minutes today cooking and then cleaning up the kitchen repeatedly. When the Sparrowhawk went to the gym, I had to lie down for a minute. I guess one goes with one's strengths . . . . Maybe tomorrow I'll actually get outside.
