Happy Bilbo and Frodo's birthday! It has been properly celebrated here. I went to the farmers market this morning and went a little bit overboard, as I generally do. I got two ears of corn, a (small) cabbage, a nice head of lettuce, two sweet peppers, three cucumbers, three leeks, six tomatoes, three different kinds of apples, and a dozen eggs. And by some miracle (more likely a greenhouse) one person was selling strawberries! And they were so beautiful, like rubies, and smelled heavenly. So I bought two quarts. Also there were still some peaches. They will need to ripen, but I think they'll be okay. And the cheese lady was there, so I got three different kinds of cheese, and as a result, she gave me a free sample of yet a fourth.

Once I got home, I set to work and made a large batch of bread and a pot of leek and potato soup with chicken, using the fresh and green leeks I just bought. We were Zooming with Deb and the Prussian, and it was very funny, because Deb and I were both wearing aprons and kept jumping up to tend to our cooking. We were both making bread and soup--in her case, for a very unfortunate cousin who had suffered a broken arm under distressing circumstances, and then got covid, probably in the ER while having the arm treated. I'm grateful that my cooking was aimed at celebration, not consolation!

After that, I cleaned the kitchen up and then made a salad with the cucumbers from the market in it, cut up a tomato, washed the berries and put them in a bowl, cooked a pound of bacon and a pound and a half of mushrooms with dill, and sliced up the cheese and put it on a platter, and laid out pots of jam and a dish of honeycomb. And put a frozen berry pie from the store in the oven. I hate to serve pie I didn't make, but honestly, these are pretty good, and I didn't have time!

Dr. Nurse, Dr. Music, and Bird Baby came over as soon as they were able, and we feasted. I had put on my amber-colored long dress, with amber beads and an autumn leaf garland that someone gave me. Bird Baby was quite enthralled with the garland and enjoyed taking it on and off me to make sure it wasn't actually growing out of my head. She ate berries like a champ, and ran around the house satisfying her curiosity. She climbed up on my lap a couple of times of her own free will, and was altogether charming. I was amazed and delighted that she remembered the fairy house we played with the last time she was here, and asked to have it again by pointing to it and making encouraging noises. Not only that, but she remembered how we played with the bunny and the flying horses, and recapitulated the whole game. I was so pleased to see the pleasure the little family took in the invitation. We all had a fine time, although Dr. Music, alas, did not dance on the table even after a glass of good ale. I sent a bag of berries, bread, cheese, and the portion of pie that Dr. Music's stomach could not accommodate. He said it would be a pity if it went to waste. "If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."
