Oct. 8th, 2023 09:38 pmThe tiredness is catching up with me a little bit. We went to church this morning, because we couldn't yesterday afternoon. I got home in time for a quick phone call with a friend, followed by another pre-scheduled call with the Diva to talk about holiday arrangments. The kids are trying to work this out. It remains to be seen what will happen. I just want everyone to be happy, or happy enough. We put her on speaker while I cut up apples. I bought two kinds of apples before our trip, and then a friend gave me more apples after she went apple picking. I was determined to use some of this bounty to make apple crisp for the potluck, but I was cutting it awfully fine. I got the pan into the oven a little after two. Then some texting with another friend, with a side trip to whip a pint of cream. And then off to the potluck.
The apple crisp was in the oven for just the amount of time specified in the recipe. However, it was NOT properly done. The spices were just right, but unless you give it an extra 15 to 30 minutes in the oven, the brown sugar and butter just don't caramelize in the way that makes it truly outstanding. I was disgruntled, but the whole pan got eaten as well as all the cream, which came in handy to dress up the pumpkin pie that someone else brought, as well. The fact that I brought dessert instead of a main dish left a big hole in the non-dessert offerings, alas. I venture to say that my participation has improved the food aspects of this potluck by 50%, single-handed. Someone needs to teach these people how to cook. Probably it's just that I'm old and most of them are young, so they don't have time.
The Sparrowhawk's little escapade yesterday brought him a lot of attention, as a lot of the guys were there at the time, and came over today to his table to chat with him and make sure he was okay. I think this is a really nice side effect. He is pretty much back to normal, but I would say not completely. He needs to be looked after for a few days. There certainly is a lot of water being drunk around here, for sure!
