Well, here we are, still at home. I wouldn't go quite so far as to say we're snowed in. Not yet. I must say I'm disappointed in the lack of a true snowpocalypse. Downtown Chicago really didn't get that much. I imagine the roads were pretty nasty. But if you decide not to do something, it's nice to have definite confirmation that the thing was not doable, and that NEVER happens. I always end up moping in retrospect and thinking "Aw, I COULDA." However, I did have a calm secluded day that I'm sure was good for my blood pressure. It didn't start snowing here until after noon, which irritated me tremendously, but now it has piled up quite a lot, and hangs thickly on every tree. I guess it is rather unkind of me to wish more misery on the people of Chicagoland just so I can feel better about my life choices.

When I got together with my little women's group on Tuesday night, my friend Strawberry Star was giving out free CDs she got from a musician friend. It was a lovely recording of some of the music of Hildegard von Bingen, with just three women's voices. The Sparrowhawk and I had finally arrived at Lorien in our reading, and this music reminds me of the part where Tolkien describes how "they could hear the sound of singing falling from on high like soft rain upon leaves." I always wonder what elf music sounds like. Because I don't know very much Latin, I can hear this as just music. At that same meeting, I also got a rude shock when another woman, whom I'll call Wood Elf because she's always camping and canoeing, described a visit with her father, who sounded very decrepit. One of the other women asked how old he was now, and she said "Seventy-eight." I told them this gave me a funny feeling, since I'll be seventy-three myself in a couple of weeks, and I don't feel THAT old! They of course said "Oh but you don't look it" etc. etc. But still!! Tuesday night was the night the snow began, and it was tricky getting home through the streets that were basically rutted slush and ice. Appropriate, I guess, that the moon is new and we are now out of the phase of Celeste and into Sleet.
