BoxElder of Leave
Oct. 8th, 2024 09:20 pmThere's a line that I would really like to find a place for in some work of fiction. I was chatting to my sisters about the questionable wisdom of three oldish people trying to haul a dock and some boats out of a lake on their own. But I realized it would totally be what my brother would do, if he were here, so it's no wonder Ms. Science thinks she should walk in his footsteps. "She thinks it's possible because she was trained by a madman," I said. They both laughed, so I guess that was not TOO socially inappropriate of me. I'd like to put that in a story somewhere.
I needed to go to the grocery store today, but I forgot this was a day on which I had too many chats scheduled, and I didn't get up early enough. I was awake for an hour in the middle of the night, having All the Thoughts, thrashing around trying to get comfortable, and had just about made up my mind to get up when I apparently fell asleep again.
I will confess my terrifying secret for this week: I volunteered to cook dinner for 30 people for a church event. That's a bit of a challenge, but what makes it really difficult is that there is one person who must have gluten free food, and I am also not allowed to use nuts, onions, mushrooms, or beans. This food sensitivity business has really sucked all the fun out of cooking! My projected menu is beef stew (without onions, mushrooms, or the seasoned flour that usually creates the gravy), homemade bread and butter (with GF biscuits or something--relieved to see that the GF flour I have doesn't have any almond flour in the mix), salad (wanted to do Riviera Salad with the toasted pecans--but no!), and chocolate cake (with some gluten free brownies--no nuts). It has to be ready to go at 5 on Thursday. I've done quite a few dinners for 20, but I don't think I've cooked for 30 since I was a young'un in co-op housing and still learning how to do mashed potatoes out of a box and jello! Yes, I believe being a bit of a lunatic runs in the family . . . .
I had a few stems of fennel left over from another project, so I'm experimenting with using chopped fennel to replace some of the interest lost with the lack of onion.
Somehow I will figure out how to get to the store and chop up 10 or 15 pounds of chuck roast. La de da . . . . Queenie says they have completed their hurricane prep, but are so over it. They've been through so many at this point. I hope and pray they don't get flooded.
