EvergladeMink of Ember
Nov. 29th, 2024 10:09 pmIt snowed all night, and then some! It's not very deep, just a few inches, but it's the most significant of the year. We hung out in the morning and people ate leisurely snacks of various leftovers, and then we all packed into our car and went to the Christmas market downtown. It's very cute--lots of little booths and snack offerings, and an enclosed space where you can get hot cocoa or gluhwein in cute, overpriced souvenir mugs. We strolled around looking at all the offerings, and the Sparrowhawk and I bought a bag of assorted Christmas goodies. They told us that if we bought just a FEW more items, we'd get a bonus gift bag. Well, that's how they get ya! I know this, but I'm a sucker for free stuff, so we bought a stollen and got our gift goodies. It really is a nice bag of things, and I was pleased to see that it includes a little box of Zimtsternen, my favorite German Christmas cookie. We made sure to include some cocoa bombs, hopefully to enjoy by the fireside tomorrow. Last year, we wanted to get a personalized ornament for Aquinas, but didn't succeed. This year we found the perfect thing.
The Sparrowhawk got Raptor to help him put batteries in our battery powered candles and place them on all the windowsills. It's a nice effect to see them glowing against the backdrop of twilight and the falling snow. Although we have a lot of leftovers still, Raptor customarily gets pizza on Fridays. We wouldn't want to break up the tradition, so we ordered pizza. The Nipper offered to go and get it so the Sparrowhawk wouldn't have to. When he came back, he said he wasn't going out again for any money! He had forgotten what it was like to drive in snow and did not have a good time. I hope the snow will taper off and begone before they have to drive home. After dinner we watched "Dr. Strangelove" at the Nipper's suggestion. This isn't quite as off the wall as it might seem--we'd been discussing a collection of Kubrick films and which ones we'd seen, etc. I hadn't watched "Dr. Strangelove" in many years, and thought it would be fun to see again with company. All of my kids know a lot about movies and have a lot to say about them. The Nipper thought this one was super funny and was laughing a lot. I remembered it as funny, but didn't laugh as much as I thought I would. Poor Colonel Mandrake! His travails were just a little too close to home. However, we sat around afterwards and talked and laughed so I got over it before having to watch a baking show or something.
