Dec. 19th, 2024

After waking up for an hour or so in the wee hours, I succeeded in going back to sleep, so it was perplexing that I felt so weirdly fatigued all day. I did not like this at all. Late in the day I succumbed to a nap, but it didn't fix anything. If this doesn't improve by tomorrow, I don't know what I'm going to do about it. On the bright side, I'm not coughing, so that's good. The Sparrowhawk is still coughing a lot, but a nap seems to have done him good, so I continue to hope that tomorrow he may be on the road to recovery. He had to cancel his book group today. Neither of us made much progress with Christmas prep.

Sadly, we have a little less to do to be ready, because the Philosopher has said definitively that he and his family can't come for Christmas. They've been trying to recuperate from one viral onslaught, but now it seems Aquinas has caught another cold, and the Philosopher has it too. I wish so much I could be there for them. They need some loving care, which I'm sure they will give each other, but it's hard to do when you're all sick!

Late last night, I got a very disjointed voice mail from Madame. I think the phone call was made earlier, but my phone didn't post the voice mail until much later. She was doing what my mother used to do--call someone's number, then wander off around the house, talking to herself semi-audibly, with the phone still on. Oy. This was disturbing, but since it was so late, there was nothign to be done about it. I contacted Mademoiselle this morning, and she relieved my worries by telling me she had actually talked to Madame before and since that call and had soothed her confusion. She also said that the staff had given Madame cold medicine, which explained a lot. That stuff can make anyone groggy. At any rate, I knew she hadn't fallen or had any other misadventures!

I nearly forgot to say that tonight it snowed again! It's very pretty and sparkly as long as you don't have to go anywhere. It's supposed to snow more tomorrow, but I don't think it will last until Christmas. It's been another in a series of dark grey days without the sun. I can't wait for the solstice. At least then I'll know the sun is drawing closer even beneath its veil of cloud.
