Yesterday was a busier day than expected, and I got tired. I woke up tired after Saturday's extravaganza, and wasn't sure I would make it to church, but at the last minute pulled myself together and struggled out of my pajamas. We found out kind of at the last minute that there was a potluck, not on the regular schedule. They were ordering pizza, but open to sides and desserts. I thought perhaps I'd already done enough cooking, but I had this idea for a cake in my mind and was beguiled by it. The recipe was for Chocolate Stout Cake, and we happened to have some actual chocolate stout, as well as Guinness. Again I thought (foolhardily) "How hard can it be?" Ha ha. Fool around and find out . . . . This cake makes three layers, but it can be baked as a sheet cake. The woman who gave me the recipe warned that in sheet cake form, it might take about twice as long to bake until the middle gets done. I chose poorly, and it took three times as long!! So it only came out of the oven when it was time to leave, and it was still boiling hot and could not be frosted. I said the heck with it and left it sitting on the counter top to deal with later.

This was providential, because my friend Strawberry Star had been given a large cake by parents at her pupils' piano recital, and people needed to eat that anyway. We could hear torrential rain on the roof as we assembled, and as we were filling our plates, all the lights went out. These days, everyone has lights on their phones, so we were not trapped in total darkness, but it was pretty dark, and then we all got weather alerts saying there was a tornado warning etc. etc. until 6:30. When we headed home, it was still raining some, but it was also still light, a definite benefit of this time of year. When we got off the highway, we encountered a couple of police trucks with their lights on, warning of a place where a tree had fallen partially into the road, and we saw other damage by the roadside. Red maple buds had been torn from the branches by high winds and lay strewn in drifts across the pavement. A couple of traffic lights were out. We were very happy to get home and see that no trees had fallen in our neighborhood, and our power was still on! Later we learned that a tree had fallen on a car in a nearby city, killing three people. There's a lot of damage to buildings west of here.

And then I put the frosting on the cake, and now I have to figure out what to do with it. This is the chonky fat boi chocolate cake of all time, the Irish car bomb of cakes. It's the size of the Dublin post office. I need to call about a dozen friends and tell them there is a cake emergency and they must come and eat it. Perhaps I can freeze some of it. We are well supplied with cake and ham in case of any emergency.

Today I did nothing much at all. I had a long phone call with Queenie. When the Sparrowhawk came home, I had a shower, and then, on the spur of the moment, decided to go back to bed and take a nap. Then I wasted a lot of time in the afternoon, puttering around with this and that. I took the rest of the ham apart, boiled the bone for broth, and put two baggies of sliced ham in the freezer. I hope this case of Don't Want To will improve by tomorrow.
