Aug. 8th, 2025 07:26 pmSadly, a dip in the lake didn't cure everything that ails me, although I feel much happier for having gone! My evening, my temperature was somewhat elevated. It could have been just from sun exposure. I was wishing I could go back and jump into that cool water again. I tried to enter the waters of sleep, but it didn't work out very well. I woke up too early, feeling still tired and uncomfortable. I had big plans for this day. I've discovered, to my alarm and displeasure, that we are infested with yet another bad invasive plant: the dreaded Japanese knotweed. Oy!! It got ahead of me because the leaves are heart-shaped, and at a distance, it can be mistaken for redbud. Redbud seeds prolifically, but is a native plant and an annoyance rather than a catastrophe. Knotweed is another of those CARTHAGO DELENDA EST! plants that must be destroyed. So my goal for the day was to get out there and attack it. Needless to say, this did not happen. After some laundry and random tidying, I took a nap instead.
I had rashly thawed out some shrimp, so I had to cook it, although I didn't really want to. The Sparrowhawk cooked some rice for me, and we had vegetables left over from a previous meal, plus salad. I cooked shiitake mushrooms and minced onion, added a bit of salt and the shrimp, then lemon zest and the juice of a fresh lemon. I didn't have any fresh herbs, and we were out of white wine, but I added some high-quality sherry because I felt that with just the lemon juice, it was too tart. The sweetness from the sherry mitigated the harshness of lemon juice.
A couple of things were delivered: a pair of redoubtable muffin pans that look as if they would be suitable for tank warfare, and two boxes of OuiSi cards, thus completing my set. They beguiled me with an offer of a discount, and then free shipping if I bought both of them. I had the original set, and now I have the Nature version and the images from the Getty Museum set. There are various games you can play with them, but I love just shuffling through them. These delectable little visual amuse-bouches tickle my fancy. A younger version of me would have been tempted to lick them, because the colors are so shiny and attractive.
