BrownBear of Leave
Oct. 16th, 2025 07:34 pmWe both slept fairly well last night, with the usual odd gap of predawn wakefulness. I continue to progress toward recovery. The Sparrowhawk is a couple of days behind me, but on the other hand, he never descended as far into the depths as I did. As usual, I can imagine way more than I can do. But I did feel like cooking again today, which I think is a good sign.
Tron and the Lumberjack gave the Sparrowhawk some cherry bbq spice rub for his birthday, and we've never tried it yet. There was a giant zucchini that the Sparrowhawk bought at the farm store, and I was worried about it going to waste. I also felt that we needed more protein in our lives now. I cut some chicken breast in strips and marinated it in a little white wine and lemon juice, and then rolled it in a mixture of spice rub and seasoned flour, and sauteed it until crispy. I cut the zucchini in strips and sliced an onion, some mushrooms, and some tomatoes, and soaked them in egg mixed with Guinness (because we were running out of milk), and then coated them in the remaining flour mix and sauteed them too. I put the veggies on top of the chicken, covered the pan, and put it in the oven to cook while I boiled and mashed some yukon gold potatoes. We were running out of both milk and half and half, but I found an extra, not-yet-expired container of cream on the top shelf in the refrigerator, and used that in the potatoes. The Sparrowhawk has been surviving mostly on chicken soup and jello, but he ate a small plate of this mixture and enjoyed it. I don't normally do the breading & frying thing, because it adds calories, but sometimes it's just good! This was one of those times. Protein + luxurious plenty of vegetables + good flavor was just what the doctor ordered. And at the price of only one, unexplained massive coughing fit.
Sadly, we also canceled two weekend social engagements. Sooner or later, this will be in the past . . . .
